Is it Safe to Store Gas in My Vehicle?

!±8± Is it Safe to Store Gas in My Vehicle?

Gasoline is a vital part of one's everyday life. It allows people to run their trucks and cars, taking children to the school and grocery home. It also helps to keep the gardens and grass looking good, powering lawn care equipments or mowers. However, gasoline may also prove out dangerous if one does not store or handles it properly. The fuel gas should be used only for its sole purpose, that is, as car fuel and kept only when required. It must not be utilized as a barbecue starter, cleaner, solvent or other non engine usage.

State and local governments are first places one should check out for regulations and standards on fuel gas. There are many regulations, codes and standards that cover up handling and store of gas within the country. For instance, fire regulations limit the amount of gas a person can store (generally no more than twenty five gallons) in standard containers with 5 gallons of capacity each. The fire codes also control the type of gas storage permitted in other places, including hospitals, car dealers, garages, service stations and industrial and commercial businesses.

Portable gas containers should be put on ground and the 'nozzle' should stay always in touch with the gas container while filling, to put off build-up and release of 'static electricity'. One should never try to fill the gasoline container in the car, including in truck beds or car trunks. It is recommendable to fill out the container at slow rate. It will certainly reduce chances of the static ignition build-up and decrease the incidents of splattering or spillage. Further, one should always keep his face far away from container opening. Extended breathing of gas vapors may also give birth to serious health related problems.

Wood gas stove

Wood gas stoves are available commercially for over . Guess what? These are low tech devices if you can cut construction paper you can build one even if you include the cost of cans fan and product it will never add up to let alone plus shipping. All you need is some cans a fan and a few supplies and you can build an effective stove. My stove is this large just because of the size of the pot I want to use. I will be using a pressure cooker it is heavy and requires a stable platform. I wanted a fan that ran on batteries that were easily rechargeable with out plugging in to power or burning any fuel. I found the fan at wal mart Believe it or not the solar lights were bought on clearance for each they had 3 rechargeable batteries in them these batteries can be used for the fan or for other items like radio flashlight etc. The solar powered clip on lights are the best for this they are portable enough to take camping should you care to. This set up is almost perpetual except we all know the batteries last a year max. YOu might be able to get AA solar chargers free people have them in their yards and will allow them to go out all you need for them are fresh rechargeable batteries these are usually about a dollar each. Lets consider the cans large coffee can 2 large cans either juice cans or tomato sauce cans. A glade aerosol can with the top and bottom removed with a can opener. A piece of metal to cover the large can and support the inner can. I used 10 ...

Texas Windstorm Generator Experience

!±8± Texas Windstorm Generator Experience

I recently had a power outage in Houston, Texas after hurricane IKE. We were fortunate to have a generator and that made the house much more livable.

Our generator is a Briggs & Stratton model 030235. It has a 10 horsepower motor and is rated at 8500 starting watts and 5500 running watts. The cost was 0 on sale at Pep Boys and an extra heavy duty 25' extension cord was included. It has a 5 gallon tank and usually ran about 10 hours with medium load. For me this was about the right size generator for a 2,000 square foot house. If I had a 3,000 sq ft house I would get a second small generator with about 3,500 starting watts and run a 3rd 10,000 portable air conditioner.

Here is what we ran on the generator:

2 Portable air conditioners (12,000 and 8,000) - Continuous Refrigerator - Continuous TV and DVD player Washer and Dryer Small Microwave Couple Lamps Cell Phone and Laptop Chargers

If you get a generator please read all instructions and take safety precautions. For example, turn the generator off and let it cool before adding fuel. It is also important not to run the generator in or near the house. My generator directions said not to run it in the rain or get it wet. A small storage shed away from the house is one possible solution for where to run it.

Here are a few other tips from my experience:

Try to get a generator that includes a 25' extension cord that is specially made for a generator. That is a big plus! Some generators are somewhat weather-resistant with items like rubber flaps to cover the sockets. I think that is a good feature. My generator started easily on the first pull every time. It may not be worth paying extra for "electric start". Start the generator with nothing plugged in. Then start appliances one at a time, starting with the largest load. (Or whatever the directions say) Gas may be hard to find after a hurricane. Five 5 gallon cans could last 2 ½ days. Add fuel stabilizer if you store fuel in cans or in the generator. The oil gets dirty fast in generators. I changed the oil every 2 days of running with 10-30 full synthetic. (Put a couple bottles in the garage) Protect your generator from theft while running and in storage. A security cable connected to something permanent could help.
